Jared Brown scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Rapid City picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-0 SO) win over the Denver Cutthroats. The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Rapid City's other shootout goal was scored by Brown.Rapid City came back from a two-goal deficit to capture the victory. Rapid City trailed 2-0 after a goal by Denver's Steve Kaunisto at 19:57 in the first period. Rapid City knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal by Konrad Reeder at 10:44 in the second period. Rapid City racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with seven minors and four majors for 34 minutes in penalty time. Rapid City surpassed its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Rapid City's offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 32.1 shots per game it averages. Justin Faryna also scored for Rapid City. Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Riley Weselowski, Winston Day Chief, Jesse Schultz, and Scott Wray, who each chipped in one. The Cutthroats forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and four majors for 48 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Denver had been spending in the box. The Cutthroats put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rapid City to score on any of its four power plays. The 36 shots that Denver put on net surpassed the Cutthroats' average of 21.4 shots per game this season. Denver was led by Troy Schwab, who tallied one goal and one assist. Schwab scored 6:27 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Denver. In addition, Denver received assists from Garrett Bembridge, who had one. Keaton Hartigan made 34 saves for Rapid City on 36 shots. Kent Patterson recorded 36 saves for the Cutthroats. Denver registered zero goals on two power play opportunities.
