Arizona outlasts Denver, 4-3

The Arizona Sundogs and the Denver Cutthroats were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Arizona made the most of its opportunities and won, 4-3.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Kevin Baker's goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.

Baker had one goal and two assists to lead the Sundogs. Baker scored 9:36 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Arizona. Alex Tuckerman assisted on the tally.

Arizona's offense was clicking better than usual and put 28 shots on goal during the game, better than the 20.0 shots per game it averages. The Sundogs were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled nine minors and one major for 23 minutes in penalty time.

Others who scored for Arizona included Matt McCready, Jordan Clendenning, Tommy Maxwell, and Paul McIlveen, who scored one goal each. More assists for Arizona came via Travis Ouellette, who had one.

The Denver penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled 10 minors and one major for 25 minutes in penalty time. The Cutthroats surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. Denver's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on eight Arizona power plays. The Cutthroats relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Troy Schwab, Garrett Bembridge and Daniel Barczuk took 21 of the team's 35 shots.

Denver additionally got points from Schwab, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Denver received assists from Steve Kaunisto, Nick Schneider, and Jeff Neitenbach, who each chipped in one.

Andrew Engelage made 32 saves for Arizona on 35 shots. Kent Patterson rejected 24 shots on goal for Denver. The Cutthroats registered three goals on eight power play opportunities.
