Quad City uses shootout to best Denver, 3-2 (2-1 SO)

Gabriel Levesque scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Quad City Mallards picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (2-1 SO) win over the Denver Cutthroats.

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Denver's shootout goal was scored by Garrett Bembridge. Quad City's other shootout goal was scored by Mike Hellyer.

The Cutthroats' power play was ineffective against the Mallards' penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

Quad City averages 35.1 shots on goal per game, but only sent 26 pucks on net against Denver. The Mallards were hit hard by penalties in the contest, and totaled eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Quad City was ineffective while on the power play, as it was held to one goal off of nine man advantages.

The Mallards were helped by Matt Boyd, who finished with one goal. Boyd scored 18:45 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Quad City. Gergo Nagy provided the assist. Quad City also got a goal from Nicolas Rioux as well. Other players who recorded assists for Quad City were Darren McMillan and Jim McKenzie, who each chipped in one.

The Cutthroats were often in penalty trouble, totaling eight minors and one major for 21 minutes in penalty time. Denver had been averaging 16.0 minutes in penalties per game.

The Cutthroats were helped by A.J. Gale, who grabbed one goal. Gale scored 10:07 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Denver. Bembridge picked up the assist. Jean-Philipp Chabot also scored for Denver. In addition, Denver received assists from Daniel Maggio and Cam Reid, who contributed one a piece.

Ty Rimmer made 23 saves for Quad City on 25 shots. Kieran Millan recorded 23 saves for Denver.
