Arizona squeaks by Allen, 3-2

The Arizona Sundogs and the Allen Americans were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Arizona made the most of its opportunities and won, 3-2.

Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Ron Meyers's goal in the third period proved to be the difference maker.

Meyers was all over the ice for the Sundogs, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Meyers scored the first of his two goals at 7:35 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Arizona. Zack Firlotte picked up the assist. Meyers' next tally made the score 3-2 Arizona with 2:22 left in the third period. Chad Langlais provided the assist.

Allen's power play was ineffective against Arizona's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The the Sundogs penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and two majors for 28 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 16.0 minutes per game Arizona had been spending in the box. The Sundogs' offense was clicking better than usual and put 33 shots on goal during the game, better than the 23.4 shots per game they average.

Arizona also got points from Kevin Petovello, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Arizona received assists from Cody Purves, who had two.

The Americans' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Arizona power plays.

Allen was led by Anthony Maiani, who registered one goal and one assist. Maiani scored 4:41 into the second period to make the score 2-2. Darryl Bootland picked up the assist. Allen also got a goal from Tyler Ludwig as well. Other players who recorded assists for Allen were Brett Skinner and Kale Kerbashian, who contributed one a piece.

David Brown rejected 20 shots on goal for Arizona. The Americans' starting goalie, Steve Silverthorn, made 29 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Aaron Dell, who stopped one shot. Allen ended with 26 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and two majors.
