Allen erases deficit to stun Rapid City, 5-4

The Allen Americans rallied from two goals down to secure a 5-4 win over Rapid City.

Allen let multiple leads slip away before eventually digging out of a two hole to pick up the win. The Americans took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Anthony Maiani at 5:50 in the first period. Allen went down 4-2 after Rapid City's Rusty Masters put the puck home on the power play at 17:28 in the second period. After knotting things up at 4-4 on a goal by Maiani at 13:53 in the third, the Americans got the game-winner from Jamie Schaafsma at 15:06 in the third period.

Maiani had a great game for Allen, netting two goals.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 15:14 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Americans were often in penalty trouble, totaling two minors and five majors for 49 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 23.0 minutes per game Allen had been spending in the box. The Americans' offense was clicking better than usual and put 36 shots on goal during the game, better than the 27.9 shots per game they average.

Allen additionally got points from Schaafsma, who also finished with one goal and one assist and Alec Martinez, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Jason Deitsch also scored for Allen. In addition, Allen received assists from Tyler Ludwig, who had two and Brett Skinner, Mike Berube, Brian McMillin, Darryl Bootland, Jarret Lukin, and Kip Brennan, who contributed one a piece.

Rapid City forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up five minors and five majors for 55 minutes in penalty time. Rapid City surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. Rapid City relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Jesse Schultz, Jeff Lee and Masters took 13 of the team's 25 shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Rapid City were Jared Brown, who had two and Scott Wray and Scott Brannon, who each chipped in one.

Allen's Aaron Dell stopped 21 shots out of the 25 that he faced. The Americans registered one goal on five power play opportunities. Allen ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Garrett Clarke was ejected from the game. Danny Battochio rejected 31 shots on goal for Rapid City. Rapid City registered one goal on two power play opportunities. For Rapid City, Justin Faryna was ejected from the game.
