Wichita falls to Allen in overtime, 3-2 (OT)

The Allen Americans pulled out a 3-2 (OT) overtime victory over the Wichita Thunder on a clutch goal by Scotty Howes.

Allen got the win with help from a great game by Howes, who had two goals and one assist. Howes scored the first of his two goals at 11:39 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Allen. Anthony Maiani assisted on the tally. Howes' next tally made the score 3-2 Allen with 16:30 left in overtime. A tripping penalty on David Inman had put the Americans on the power play. Maiani picked up the assist.

With 39 shots on target during the contest, Allen exceeded the 30.3 shots it averages per game this year.

Allen additionally got points from Trevor Ludwig, who also had one goal and one assist.

Wichita forced its penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up eight minors and two majors for 27 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 17.0 minutes per game the Thunder had been spending in the box. Wichita relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Todd Griffith, Aaron Boogaard and Gregor Hanson took 13 of the team's 23 shots.

The Thunder were helped by Kevin Young, who registered one goal. Young scored on the power play 18:00 into the second period to make the score 1-0 Wichita. Wichita had taken the advantage when the Americans' Ludwig got sent off for hooking. Andrew Martens provided the assist. Chad Painchaud also scored for Wichita. More assists for Wichita came via RG Flath, who had one.

Steve Silverthorn made 21 saves for Allen on 23 shots. The Americans totaled 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors and two majors and went 2-for-8 on the power play. Kevin Regan recorded 36 saves for the Thunder. Wichita registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
