Denver uses shootout to best Rapid City, 3-2 (3-0 SO)

Brad Smyth scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Denver Cutthroats picked up the extra point in a 3-2 (3-0 SO) win over Rapid City.

The shootout featured seven attempts between both teams. Denver also got shootout goals from Smyth and Luke Fulghum.

The Cutthroats came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Denver was down 2-1 after a goal by Rapid City's Tristin Llewellyn at 14:38 in the second period. The Cutthroats knotted things up at 2-2 on a power play goal by Fulghum at 16:18 in the second period.

By firing 31 shots on goal, Denver exceeded the 26.7 shots it averages per game this year.

The Cutthroats were helped by Jean-Philipp Chabot, who had one goal. Chabot scored 13:06 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Denver. Mario Boilard picked up the assist. In addition, Denver received assists from Troy Schwab, A.J. Gale, and Joel Chouinard, who each chipped in one.

Rapid City was led by Scott Brannon, who registered one goal and one assist. Brannon scored on the power play 10:48 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Rapid City had taken the advantage when Denver's Schwab got sent off for interference. Riley Weselowski assisted on the tally. More assists for Rapid City came via Jeff Lee and Jordan Baker, who contributed one a piece.

The Cutthroats' Kieran Millan stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. Denver incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Tim Boron rejected 28 shots on goal for Rapid City. Rapid City incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
