Arizona uses shootout to best Wichita, 2-1 (2-1 SO)

Derek LeBlanc scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and the Arizona Sundogs picked up the extra point in a 2-1 (2-1 SO) win over the Wichita Thunder.

The two teams needed 12 turns to complete the shootout. Wichita's shootout goal was scored by Matt Summers. In addition to the clincher, Arizona got a shootout goal from Mikael Bedard.

The Sundogs overcame a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Arizona fell behind 1-0 after a goal by the Thunder's Neil Trimm at 7:41 in the first period. The Sundogs tied things up at 1-1 on a goal by Jake Hauswirth at 11:09 in the second period.

Arizona was led by goalie Adam Russo, who finished with 27 saves while allowing one goal. Russo certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.09 entering the contest.

The Sundogs' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Wichita power plays.

In addition, Arizona received assists from Bedard, who had one.

Wichita was held below its usual level of production. The Thunder put an average of 3.7 pucks into the net per game. Wichita relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, as Trimm, Kevin Young and Ian Lowe took 15 of the team's 28 shots.

More assists for Wichita came via Chad Painchaud, who had one.

Arizona incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. The Thunder's Kevin Regan stopped 20 shots out of the 21 that he faced. Wichita incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
