Chaulk's big game bests Dayton in 6-2 Fort Wayne win

Colin Chaulk had one goal and four assists to lead the Fort Wayne Komets to a 6-2 victory over the Dayton Gems.

Chaulk beat Larry Sterling with a shot 6:16 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fort Wayne. Mike Vaskivuo provided the assist. Chaulk dished an assist on Bobby Chaumont's goal that made the score 2-1 Fort Wayne at 12:55 into the first period. He then added assists on Kaleigh Schrock's goal at 10:44 into the second, on Chris Auger's goal at 19:26 into the second, and on Tom Mele's goal at 5:01 into the third.

Fort Wayne put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Dayton to score on any of its five power plays. The Komets' goal total was higher than their season average. Fort Wayne has scored at the pace of 3.5 goals per game during the current campaign. With 46 shots on target during the contest, the Komets exceeded the 32.3 shots they average per game this year.

Other players who recorded assists for Fort Wayne were Frankie DeAngelis, who had one and Jamie Milam, who had two.

Fort Wayne was unable to stop the Gems from sending pucks towards the net, and Dayton eventually piled up 33 shots on goal.

The Gems were helped by Damian Surma, who registered one goal. Surma scored short handed 8:35 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Dayton found itself down a man on Brett Lutes' slashing. Nick Schneider assisted on the tally. David Nimmo also scored for Dayton. More assists for Dayton came via Tim Hartung and Matthew Larke, who each chipped in one.

The Komets' Nick Boucher stopped 31 shots out of the 33 that he faced. Fort Wayne incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. The Gems' starting goalie, Larry Sterling, made 35 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Dan Dunn, who stopped five shots. Dayton incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors.
