Missouri beats Tulsa 5-4 after comeback scare

The Tulsa Oilers tried their best to erase a two-goal deficit, but the Missouri Mavericks would not be denied the victory and hung on to win, 5-4.

Missouri made the score 5-3 on a goal by Brandon Smith at 2:26 in the third period, and Tulsa got as close as 5-4 when David Solway scored 3:33 into the third period.

Patrick Schafer had two goals and one assist to lead the Mavericks. Schafer scored the first of his two goals at 10:48 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Jardine provided the assist. Schafer's next tally made the score 3-2 Tulsa with 3:17 left in the second period. Kris Hogg assisted on the tally.

Missouri stifled the Oilers' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The 42 shots that the Mavericks put on net surpassed Missouri's average of 28.9 shots per game this season.

Andrew Courtney also scored for Missouri. In addition, Missouri received assists from Sebastien Thinel, who had two and Dave Pszenyczny, Ed McGrane, and Dale Mahovsky, who contributed one a piece.

Tulsa's offense rang up 41 shots on the Mavericks' net.

The Oilers were helped by Michel Beausoleil, who finished with one goal. Beausoleil scored short handed 15:01 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Tulsa. A cross checking call on Ryan Cramer put Tulsa on the penalty kill. Marty Standish provided the assist. Tulsa also got a goal from Dylan Clarke as well. More assists for Tulsa came via Luke Lucyk, who had two and Mike Ullrich, Sean Erickson, Troy Ofukany, and Jeff Terminesi, who each chipped in one.

Charlie Effinger made 37 saves for Missouri on 41 shots. The Mavericks totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Ian Keserich rejected 37 shots on goal for the Oilers. Tulsa totaled 21 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-3 on the power play. For the Oilers, Erickson was ejected from the game.
