Surma lifts Dayton over Bloomington, 6-1Grossinger Motors Arena Sat, Mar 17, 2012 Story by Narrative Science.
Damian Surma had two goals to lead the Dayton Gems to a 6-1 victory over the Bloomington Blaze. Surma's tallies came on the power play at 17:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Dayton and on the power play 5:49 into the second to make the score 2-0 Dayton.Dayton was led by goalie Larry Sterling, who finished with 40 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of Sterling will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.68. The Gems' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on four Bloomington power plays. Dayton outdid its season average for goals scored. This season, the Gems average 2.8 goals per contest. The defensemen of Dayton were also effective in Bloomington's zone, and came away with two goals. The Gems' offense was clicking better than usual and put 41 shots on goal during the game, better than the 26.5 shots per game they average. Dayton also got points from Tim Hartung, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Jonathan Ornelas also scored for Dayton. More assists for Dayton came via Nick Schneider, Brett Lutes, Brandon Naurato, Greg Labenski, and Matthew Larke, who contributed one a piece and Nick Fanto and Kyle Bochek, who each chipped in two. The Blaze's penalty kill unit could not stop Dayton's power play, which converted on three of four opportunities. Bloomington forced the Gems goalie Sterling to work between the pipes, taking 41 shots. The Blaze were led by Vladimir Nikiforov, who scored the team's only goal. Nikiforov scored 7:50 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Dayton. Kyle Laughlin assisted on the tally. Dayton incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. Bloomington's starting goalie, Zane Kalemba, made 23 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Brian Mahoney-Wilson, who stopped 12 shots. The Blaze incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors.
