Dayton rips Arizona, 5-2

The Arizona Sundogs had trouble finding ways to stop the Dayton Gems, which beat Sundogs, 5-2.

Dayton got the win thanks to a great game by Damian Surma, who had one goal and two assists. Surma scored 14:32 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Dayton. Jonathan Ornelas provided the assist.

The Gems bested their season scoring average. Dayton averages 2.6 goals per game. The Gems put 36 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.8 they average per game.

Dayton additionally got points from Nick Fanto, who also grabbed one goal and two assists and Brett Lutes, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Dayton also got a goal from Matthew Larke as well. More assists for Dayton came via Tim Hartung and Brandon Naurato, who each chipped in one.

Arizona managed to stay out of the box better than usual, racking up one minor for two minutes in penalty time. The Sundogs wound up below its season average of 21.0 penalty minutes per game. By firing 40 shots on goal, Arizona exceeded the 28.0 shots it averages per game this year.

The Sundogs were helped by Luke Erickson, who registered one goal. Erickson scored on the power play 16:05 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Dayton. Arizona had gotten the advantage when Dayton's Dustin DeGagne was sent off for holding. Kyle Hood assisted on the tally. In addition, Arizona received assists from Craig Macdonald, Olivier Proulx, and Zach Carriveau, who contributed one a piece.

Dan Dunn made 38 saves for the Gems on 40 shots. Dayton incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with three minors. Scott Reid rejected 31 shots on goal for the Sundogs. Arizona registered one goal on three power play opportunities.
