Applin’s sophomore campaign was a display of continued success on the collegiate level.  The pitcher appeared in more games than the previous season and struck out 22 batters in just 24 innings.  Applin’s perseverance allowed him to contribute two wins to a team that only managed 13 on the season. As a freshman, Applin was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie team.  He finished that campaign with a 1-1 record, two saves, and a 2.25 ERA in 15 relief appearances.  Significantly improving as the season progressed, Applin posted a perfect 0.00 ERA and held Atlantic 10 hitters to a .133 average over eight conference appearances (15 IP).  He earned his first collegiate win at Fordham on April 14 and picked up his first save against Temple a week later.  That season he also tossed 19.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run from March 20  to May 23.  Applin was a member of the baseball and basketball teams at Malden High School.  He appeared in 86 games throughout his career, combining for a 1.39 ERA, 227 strikeouts, and 18 wins.  He earned All-Star accolades from the Malden News and the Boston Globe.  In addition to those honors, he helped lead his team to the state semifinals in 2012 and recorded a school-record 19 strikeouts in a playoff game against Cambridge.
