An 11th round (338th overall) selection by the Chicago White Sox in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, McDonald is a multi-dimensional player for Arizona State capable of playing both the infield and outfield, who is also a dual threat at the plate as a switch hitter. McDonald, who will be utilized mainly as an infielder with the Newport Gulls, is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign with the Sun Devils in which he played in 53 games, starting all of them, batting .286 (52-for-182) with 28 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 27 RBI and five stolen bases.

McDonald appeared in just five games as a freshman in 2011, batting .333 (1-for-3). McDonald recorded his first career collegiate hit, a double, at Washington. A dual sport athlete in high school, McDonald earned four varsity letters in baseball and two in football. McDonald was named a 2010 First Team All-State and All-Region selection along with earning MVP honors in the 5A-II All-Star Game. McDonald helped lead Chaparral High School to a state title in 2008.
