A superb effort by Jessie Smith lifted the Maui Na Koa Ikaika (11-9) to a 2-1 win over the Hawaii Stars on Wednesday at Wong Stadium.

Smith's 10 strikeouts were enough to push the Maui Na Koa Ikaika past the Hawaii Stars (9-11). Smith allowed no earned runs, three hits and two walks over seven innings.

The Hawaii Stars jumped out to an early lead, but they were unable to hang on. The Hawaii Stars were ahead until the eighth inning, but the Maui Na Koa Ikaika would not be denied the win, taking the lead back on a two-run triple by Nick Valdez.

A bright spot for the Hawaii Stars in the defeat was Bryan Herrera, who allowed only one run while striking out five.

Michael Kenui (1-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, walked none, struck out one, and allowed one run.
