The Medicine Hat Mavericks take out the Yorkton Cardinals with help from Smith, 7-2

The Medicine Hat Mavericks (27-13) beat the Yorkton Cardinals (12-28) 7-2 on Saturday at Jubilee Park behind Ben Smith, who went 2-3.

He singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the ninth inning.

Andrew Shoemaker's nine strikeouts were enough to push the Medicine Hat Mavericks past the Yorkton Cardinals. Shoemaker allowed two earned runs on eight hits and no walks over nine innings.

It was a good day at the plate for the Yorkton Cardinals' Tory Bell. Bell went 2-4, drove in one and scored one run. He homered in the second inning and singled in the sixth inning.

Corey Thompson was charged with his fourth loss of the year. He allowed seven runs in eight innings, walked three and struck out nine.
