The Quincy Gems (1-0) and the Springfield Sliders (0-1) both had scoring chances on Thursday, but it was the Quincy Gems that were able to capitalize on them as they pulled out an 8-5 win at Quincy Stadium.

Shea Stine racked up two RBIs on one hit for the Quincy Gems. He homered in the fifth inning.

Jacob Thiessen was effective even in defeat, mowing down six the Quincy Gems batters and allowing zero runs.

The Springfield Sliders were led by Drew Quinones's hitting. Quinones went 3-5 and scored one run. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the fourth and ninth innings.

Spencer Juergens got the win, running his season record to 1-0. He allowed three runs over five innings. He struck out three, walked two and surrendered five hits.

Jose Marin was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, walked four, struck out 10, and allowed five runs.
