As a freshman in 2009, Kliniske played in 16 games and got two starts as designated hitter.  He had a 2-3 record on the mound with one save and a 5.93 ERA in 13 relief appearances, striking out 37 batters in 27 1/3 innings.  His 12.18 strikeouts per nine innings ranked second in school history.  Kliniske struck out a season-high seven batters against Centenary, and was named to the Summit League Winter/Spring All-Academic Team. 

Kliniske was a five-year starter for Grafton High School, where he set career records for wins and strikeouts.  He played four seasons for the Grafton American Legion, and was also a three-time All-Region pick.
