Smith, who is a two-way player that can skillfully play the outfield while demonstrating the ability to pitch upon request, comes to Newport after finishing his junior season with the Kansas Jayhawks. In 2014, Smith has hit .333 with two home runs and 42 RBI in 50 games. On the hill, Smith has made 17 appearances, going 1-2 with a 4.01 ERA and 23 strikeouts.
In 2013, Smith hit .267, but stole nine bases in 54 games. Also in 2013, Smith began to pitch for the Jayhawks, allowing no runs in 2.1 innings of work. Smith’s freshman year with Kansas (2012) saw Smith playing in 41 games, hitting two home runs and driving in 19 runs, all while hitting .248.
Smith came to Kansas after attending Lansing High School (Lansing, Kansas), where he was selected to be an All-State player by the Kansas City Metro. Smith was also named to the All-Sunflower League twice during his high school career.
