Cooper joins the RailCats for his first season after signing with the team in May. Cooper signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012 as an undrafted free agent following his senior year at the University of Utah. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Cooper went straight to Yakima of the Northwest League (Class-A Short Season) that summer, hitting .213 with six home runs, 21 extra-base hits, 29 RBI and four stolen bases in 67 games. In 2014, Cooper began his independent professional baseball career with the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League. In 17 games, Cooper batted .266 with one home run, five doubles and six RBIs in 17 games. In 2016, Cooper signed with the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League, hitting .313 with two home runs, eight extra-base hits, 12 RBIs in 26 games.
