Marcus Nidiffer drove in the go-ahead run to give the Traverse City Beach Bums (57-29) the lead in the ninth inning, as the Traverse City Beach Bums hung on to beat the Normal CornBelters (28-58) 3-2 on Wednesday.
Chase Burch reached on an error to start the ninth. He then went from first to second on an RBI single by Kyle Colligan. Finally, Nidiffer came to the plate with the score tied at two, and hit a sacrifice fly, bringing home Burch.Jose Vargas was hot from the plate for the Traverse City Beach Bums. Vargas went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He homered in the seventh inning and singled in the ninth inning.
Nick Capito looked sharp on the mound. The Normal CornBelters managed just one hit off of Capito, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out five during his 3 2/3 innings of work.
A bright spot for the Normal CornBelters in the defeat was Drew Provence, who allowed only one run while striking out five.
Brendon Smith was charged with his sixth loss of the year. He lasted just one-third of an inning, walked none, struck out one, and allowed two runs.
