The Grand Lake Mariners (1-3) were never able to get over the hump and get over their troubles against the Lake Erie Monarchs (1-4) on Tuesday, as the Grand Lake Mariners fell 5-3 at Ned Skeldon Stadium after falling behind by four runs in the second inning.
The Grand Lake Mariners scored three runs in the fifth on a two-run error and a groundout by Jason Defevers. Still, the Grand Lake Mariners couldn't catch the Lake Erie Monarchs.
The Grand Lake Mariners had no answer for Jay Perry, who kept runners off the basepaths in his appearance. Perry held the Grand Lake Mariners hitless over two innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one.
J.J. Buckey was effective even in defeat, mowing down five the Lake Erie Monarchs batters and allowing one run.
Heath Slatton improved to 1-1 on the year by picking up the win for the Lake Erie Monarchs. Slatton struck out two, walked four and gave up two hits.
Darin Waterman was charged with his first loss of the year. He lasted just four innings, walked three, struck out one, and allowed four runs.
