The SECRHL Hockey Weekend was a huge success!!! There were a total of 29 games played, starting Friday night going until Sunday afternoon. The level of competition and skill was the best it has ever been here at Breakaway Sports.
But, the biggest success came from Breakaway Sport's home team, UNCC Forty Niners. The Forty Niners started the weekend off playing Kennesaw State Friday Night. The Niners started the game off strong leading 3-1 after the first period. But the third period faired to be a different story for the Niners who let up 2 unanswered goals ending the game in a 3 all tie.
Saturday would turn out to be a very successful day for the home town Niners. They started the day off with a game versus the University of South Carolina Game Cocks. The Niners came out of the gate scoring 2 goals in the first period and another 2 in the second. But, the scoring really opened up in the third period when the Niners netted 4 goals ending the game with an 8-0 win over the Game Cocks. The Niners would finish off Saturday with a game versus the University of Tennessee. The Niners came out strong yet again scoring 7 goals in the first stanza. The Niners went into the 2nd period with a nice 7-1 lead and never let up, putting 5 more goals on the board. The Niners would go on to add 5 more goals in the third period finishing the game up 18-2.
The Niners went into Sunday feeling pretty confident about their upcoming game versus Virginia Tech. The first period would turn out to be an extremely even period with both teams having 2 goals on the board. But, the Niners started to pull away in the second period scoring 3 unanswered goals. Virginia Tech started the third period off with two goals in the first 3 minutes battling back within one of the Niners. But, the Niners answered back with two goals putting the game out of reach for Virginia Tech giving the Niners an 8-5 win.
