In Depth With Coach Sam Keller

Date:  Source: Milwaukee Baseball Academy

This week, we did an exclusive interview with head trainer and hitting coach Sam Keller. We got in depth and asked questions about his own business, What Do You Need a Gym For Fitness, his role at MBA and plans for the future. Here's what Sam had to say:

When did you start What Do You Need a Gym For Fitness LLC.?
I started WDYNAGF Fitness, LLC. In the summer of 2014.

What inspired you to start it?
While playing a sport in college I found I had a true passion for the body and how it operates by going through so many workouts and training session. I grew to love the training and wanted to pursue a career in this field. I take physical fitness very seriously because I believe a healthy body will lead to a healthy mind. When the mind and body are working together a person can achieve anything they set their mind to. I wish to apply what I have learned through college, internships, and personal experience to the people who wish to become physically fit. Obesity is a problem in today’s society and through exercise and proper dieting people can defeat this problem one by one. I would be honored to fight side by side with those people. For those reasons I have created WhatDoYouNeedAGymFor Fitness, LLC.

What is the primary goal of your company?
We want to help people get from a sedentary lifestyle to an active lifestyle. We want to build the bridge between people who are sedentary and those who are physically fit.  We want to give people the proper techniques to properly put their bodies in the correct position. With the basic skills mastered the individual will gain confidence and be able to apply their knowledge to not just fitness, but to all aspects of their life.

What’s your baseball background?
I started my baseball career at North Central Little League and played travel baseball for the Wisconsin Diamond Kings.  I played high school sports at Milwaukee Riverside University High School where I lettered four times in baseball and three times in football. While in High School I participated in the 2008 International High School Homerun Derby in Tampa Bay, Florida where I was the Wisconsin representative.

I received a Division 1 scholarship to Grambling State University in 2008. Where I played 1st base and DH. I transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater after two years at GSU. I finished my athletic career at Whitewater as a senior captain in 2013.

What is your biggest inspiration to work out and keep grinding?
My biggest inspiration  for working out are the kids that I train and I inspire. My student athletes look up to me. I work hard because they look at me for guidance.

Why do you enjoy teaching kids?
I love to see children excel in their sports. When they see their works pay off then they understand the true meaning behind my catch phrase “Everyday We Grind”. If they work hard it WILL PAY OFF.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself opening my own facility for training or working for a college as an exercise physiologist.

What’s your affiliation with MBA?
I am the head strength and conditioning coach and one of the hitting instructors.

Why did you choose MBA over other places?
I have been knowing the owner Dave Casey for roughly 12 years of my life and I feel at home at MBA. It has a family feel to it and the athletes I train there really appreciate the work I do for them.

What is your favorite thing about teaching kids?
I love to see the kids SUCCEED. That is why I do it.
