QUINCY -- The Quincy Gems pounded out 17 hits Saturday night and rolled to an 11-1 victory over the U.S. Military All-Stars before a large crowd that was there for the dedication of the Wall of Honor at QU Stadium and the recognition of members of the military.
The game was an exhibition and did not count toward the Prospect League for the Gems (19-23 overall), the first-half champions in the West Division.
C.J. Schaeffer led the Gems with four hits. He singled and scored in the first, drove in a run with a double in the second, singled in the sixth and doubled in two runs in the seventh.
Dean Nevarez had three hits for the Gems, including an RBI single in the first and a double in the sixth. Shea Stine also had three hits for the Gems.
The Gems scored once in the first, twice in the second and twice in the fourth. Quincy then put the game away with two more runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh.
Scottie Sanders, Michael Nielsen and Chandler Purcell all had two hits each for the Gems.
Alex Ruxlow was the starting pitcher, and he allowed the only run for the All-Stars in the second inning. He was relieved in the fourth inning by Scott Gorsuch, who pitched two innings. Also throwing two innings were Ben Sellers and Glenford Sanchez. The four pitchers combined to allow just three hits.
