For the 4th time this season, Eagles manage to blow a 4th quarter lead and the 3rd time at home. Heading into the 4th quarter, Eagles held a 24-20 lead over the Bears just to see it quickly disappear.
Jay Cutler, going 18/32 for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns drove the Bears down the field for an eventual 5 yard score to receiver Earl Bennett to give Chicago a 27-24 lead with well over eleven minutes remaining in the game. One might say, plenty of time for the Eagles to get the lead back with this high-powered offense? Wrong, they managed to get stopped on all of their next possessions.
Micheal Vick, finished the game going 21/38 for 213 yards 1 interception and zero touchdowns, couldn’t extend drives and his running game was a non factor as the Bears defense matched him speed for speed on the occasions where he decided to take off and run, only managing 34 yards on five carries. NFL second leading rusher coming into the game LeSean McCoy, rushed for 74 yards on 16 carries as he had couple spurts where he found the opening but for the most part, Bears kept him grounded.
“ You can’t let opportunities like this slip away, said Vick. “I feel like we had a chance to win this game and we let it slip away.”
The defense came out flat; one week after they only allowed Dallas to score seven points it didn’t look like the same defense. Not being able to pressure Cutler and failed to register a sack for the first time since week 11 of the 2010 season. Once called the best trio of corners in the league looked average at best and came up very small. Asante Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique – Rodgers Cromartie were non-factors as Cutler was finding open receivers virtually every drive. Cromartie, the acquisition from Arizona for quarterback Kevin Kolb, continues to look lost as the slot corner, step slow on majority of his plays, blown coverage’s and even quit on a tackle. The defense has now allowed at least 29 points in four of the five games. The one bright spot was the interception for touchdown by rookie linebacker Brian Rolle.
At 3-5, Eagles are three back of the division leading Giants and have a giant hole to dig out of if they hope to make the playoffs. Giants difficult schedule and the fact they are 24-32 under Tom Coughlin in the second half of the season might be the only thing still keeping the Eagles alive.
