2014 NECBL Preview: Ocean State Waves
Date: Jun 3, 2014
Alums Appel, Pentecost Recognized by MLB.com
MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo revealed his Top 100 Major League Prospects on January 23rd.
Right handed pitcher and Houston Astro prospect Mark Appel (2010 Newport) weighed in at #17. Appel was also ranked as the sixth best right handed prospect in the Minor Leagues.
Selected by the Astros with the first pick of the 2013 Draft, the Stanford-educated Appel did little to disappoint. The 6’5” Texas native who was raised near Palo Alto had a 33:9 strikeout to walk ratio in 10 starts between Rookie and Class A ball.
As a freshman Newport Gull, Appel ranked sixth in the NECBL with a 1.87 ERA. He allowed just 33 hits in 43.1 innings.
Mayo also named Max Pentecost (Pictured) as the 20th best prospect in the 2014 Draft.
Kennesaw State catcher Pentecost played for the 2012 Holyoke Blue Sox, hitting .303 with three homers and seven doubles in 37 games. A seventh round pick of the Texas Rangers in high school, Pentecost was named MVP of the Cape Cod League in 2013. Mayo, at this point, projects that Pentecost will be the first college catcher taken.
