(MISSISSAUGA, ON) - On Monday, August 19, all 9 teams from the National Basketball League of Canada were in attendance at the Hilton Suites in Markham to participate in the 2013 NBL Canada draft. New expansion team Ottawa SkyHawks selected Alex "Superman" Johnson, who became the first ever Canadian player to be selected #1 overall in the NBL Canada draft. Next, the expansion Brampton A's selected 6'4 swingman Brent Jennings out of Southern Polytechnic State.
The Mississauga Power held five picks in this year's draft. The Power selected Bol Kong out of Gonzaga University & St. Francis Xavier with their first pick (4th overall). Bol Kong is a 6'8 athletic swingman who can shoot from outside and dominate in the paint. Kong was very eager to prove to everyone he deserved the high pick, stating: "My ceiling is as hard as I want to work, this is a new chapter of my life, I am trying to make a living"
Next, the Power selected 6'8 Dwight McCombs with the #14 pick, who was touted as the "most athletic player in the draft". Dwight played in NCAA Division I University of Central Florida (UCF). Before playing at UCF, Dwight played at Moraine Valley Community College, where he averaged 22.5 points and 13.3 rebounds in his senior year.
With the #18 pick, The Power selected Marcus James out of Sam Houston Bearkats. During his tenure with the Bearkats, Marcus was the co-captain and vocal leader of the team. Marcus will utilize his high motor that will help the Power with rebounding and blocking shots.
The Power's first pick in the third round (#23) was 6’4 swingman, Eric Petty Jr., out of Mississippi Valley State. As a senior, Eric averaged 12.5 points and 8.3 rebounds. Eric looks forward to bringing high energy and athleticism to Mississauga.
The last pick of the draft which was also the final pick for the Power became a big crowd pleaser. The Power selected Mississauga native, Branko Veljovic (29th overall), who was immediately met with an explosion of enthusiasm from the crowd. Branko participated in the MegaCity Power Pro-Am this summer and has long been one of the best players from MegaCity Basketball, winning MVP in the advanced league.
"I am very please with the outcome of last night's draft. We succesfully executed our plan and the players that we selected will be great addtions to our system." stated Head Coach of the Power, Fred Grannum. The Mississauga Power have built some very solid pieces with last night's draft. Look for Bol, Dwight, Marcus, Eric & Branko to take the team to the next level this November at the Hershey Centre!
