This week, we are recognizing two newcomers to the Waves after their standout performances so early into collegiate careers! Our Players of the Week are freshman catcher Samuel Fernandez and freshman pitcher Benton Hickman. 

After an impressive performance at the plate this weekend, our Hitter of the Week is freshman Samuel Fernandez from Stetson University. Fernandez led his team to a victory against Virginia with a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. Across the weekend games, Fernandez had a .400 batting average, seven RBIs and two home runs. His first home run of his collegiate career came in Stetson’s game against North Dakota State where Stetson took home an 8-4 victory. 

On the mound, earning Pitcher of the Week is freshman Benton Hickman from the University of Arizona. The right-handed pitcher impressed in two appearances this weekend in Arizona’s four-game series against the University of Connecticut. The Arizona native pitched three innings and recorded five strikeouts along with only two hits and one run allowed. 

These freshmen are doing amazing so far early into their college seasons and we are so proud of their accomplishments! Their early success is just a glimpse into the talent they will bring to Old Mountain Field this summer!
