New Tecumseth Civics @ Knights of Meaford

2.13.20- Knights 6, Civics 3

A shorthanded Civics team resting key players before playoffs were no match for a Knights team that had its best scoring night in a month as Meaford defeated New Tecumseth by a score of 6-3 in GMHL Thursday night action at Meaford St. Vincent Community Centre.

Meaford opened up the scoring with the only goal in the first period when Benjamin Colonna scored just under 2 minutes into the contest.

In the middle frame the Knights extended their lead to 3-0 on goals by Garrett Geddes and Felix Lecomte who scored his 20th of the season.

The Civics would get on the board early in the third period when Cody Woodward connected on the power play for his 5th goal of the season.

5 Minutes later Woodward scored again to cut the lead to 3-2, with assists on both of these goals Civics captain Riley Nadeau reached the 100 point mark on the season becoming the first player to reach this milestone with the Civics.

Meaford however would score 3 straight goals to pull away in this one including 2 by Andy Muthu.

Ethan Salter got one while shot handed but the Civics comeback attempt proved to be too little too late.

Civics goaltender Chris Cabral started the game allowing 1 goal in half a games action before a planned goalie switch to Yaroslav Leontev who allowed 5 in defeat.

The Civics peppered Knights goaltender Noah Preston with shots but he managed to turn away 51 of 54 attempts to secure the win for Meaford.

Playoff Series Preview

New Tecumseth Civics (5) vs. Bradford Rattlers (4)

Game 1: 7:30 Thursday February 20that New Tecumseth Rec Centre

Game 2: 7:30 Sunday February 23rd at BWG Leisure Centre

Game 3: 2:30 Tuesday February 25th at BWG Leisure Centre

The Civics start off the Russell Cup playoffs with a division quarterfinal matchup with the fifth seeded Bradford Rattlers. The Rattlers finished 28-12-2 good enough for 58 points while the Civics finished fifth in the division with 52 points. The Civics are coming off a rocky end to their season that saw them drop their final 3 games, however it is comforting knowing one of their last wins came against the Rattlers. The Rattlers look very strong coming into the playoffs having won 10 of their last 12 games. The Civics will be relying on the pieces to come together and for captain Riley Nadeau to be able to use his skill and creativity to exploit a Rattlers defense that was a weaker unit then their goaltending and Offense. Secondary forward scoring is led by veteran Marshel Tupper but beyond him the Civics have received productive seasons from rookie forwards Vadim Tsyrkunov, Ethan Salter, Savva Verbetskii and Viacheslav Vorobev. The defense will be looked upon to take a big step forward in the playoffs as the unit led by veterans Mikhail Kornilov, Cody Woodward, and Kyle Weeks will be put to the test and must be able to consistently shut down Bradford’s top weapons Brayden Morris and Mike Dyck. In net the Civics will look for veteran netminder Vince Michelizzi to heat up and he will be given every opportunity following his two strong performances against the Rattlers in the last month, he will need to be sharp to go head to head against last year’s goaltender of the year Trevor Babin. Playing a full 60 minutes has been the focal point of the Civics season and all of us here in Civic nation know that we have the skill to compete with anyone in the division and we wish all the best of luck to the Civics as they start this tough series.
