RANGERS DOWNED IN OT

HAGERSVILLE (Jan. 25) -- The Glanbrook Rangers suffered their first loss of 2020 and their first overtime loss of the season as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Hagersville Hawks.

Even though the Rangers didn't come away empty-handed -- they earned a single point -- the OT loss dealt a serious blow to their chances of finishing first in the South Bloomfield Division.  As they head into their final contest of the regular season on Wednesday, Jan. 29 against Hespeler Shamrocks, there is still a mind-bending mathematical chance for the Rangers to capture top spot, but it would require some extremely good fortune.   The Rangers currently sit in second with 60 points and their best finish would be 62 points with a win over the Shamrocks.  Meanwhile, Grimsby has 61 points and Hagersville has 59; both of them have two games left in their seasons.

Glanbrook's Noah Matteson opened the scoring in this tightly-fought affair, connecting for his 30th goal of the season at 15:17 of the second period.  But Hagersville drew even with a goal from Connor Stirling at 4:21 of the third period, then got the winner from Tycie Cowan just 57 seconds into the extra frame.

Ranger netminder Matt Lukic suffered his first loss since Nov. 21, but his 29-save effort boosted his save percentage to .941, third-best in the PJHL among goalies with more than 10 appearances.

NOTES: Matteson topped 30 goals for the second straight season (he had 35 last year) and took over the Rangers point-scoring leadership with 60 (matching his Jr C career high set last season), one more than Noah Bollert.   Matteson had seven points in his last three games ... Glanbrook has played six overtime games this season with a record of two wins, one loss and three ties
