HESPELER (Jan. 11) -- The Glanbrook Rangers battled to their first tie of the season, a 2-2 standoff with the Hespeler Shamrocks that contained more than its share of fireworks. The draw keeps the Rangers' point streak running at four games (three wins and a tie) and leaves them two back of Grimsby Peach Kings in the duel for first place in the South Bloomfield Division.
Noah Bollert scored his league-best 33rd goal of the season and Connor McQuhae added his 17th while keeping his personal point-scoring streak alive at nine games. Both goals came in the first period at the end of which the Rangers held a 2-1 lead. But the action went off the rails in the second frame as Glanbrook lost their top two scorers Bollert and Noah Matteson (pictured), who engaged in separate slugfests with Hespeler's Tony Tikel and Matthew Tonner in the waning moments, earning fighting majors and an array of game misconducts across the board. Glanbrook's Sean Golebiowski and Hespeler's Kyle Wagner earned similar banishments before the third period was four minutes old.
After the chaos, Hespeler's Brett Hartin knotted the game at 9:02 of the third, and the teams grappled through the remaining 11 minutes plus seven minutes of three-on-three overtime with neither side able to deliver the decisive blow despite an abundance of shots on goal, 87 in all, with 48 by Glanbrook alone. Mitch Robinson went the distance in goal for the Rangers, making 37 saves.
NOTES: Bollert will likely face suspension for a couple of games as his game misconduct was for the second fight in a stoppage of play ... This marked the first time the Rangers finished in a tied game since a 7-7 deadlock with the Dundas Blues way back on Nov. 30, 2016 ... The Rangers record in overtime now stands at two wins, no losses and one tie. ... This game was the makeup for a contest postponed from Dec. 1 owing to bad weather.
