ELKVILLE, IL - According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, former Chillicothe Paints right-handed pitcher, Travis Lakins was called up by the Red Sox on Tuesday. He will wear uniform number 65.
Prior to the call, the 24-year-old had not made his big-league debut. According to baseball insiders, Lakins is an interesting relief prospect, with a potential plus curveball and a 2.22 ERA in 24.1 innings at Triple-A.
Here is a brief scouting report on Lakins from Ian Cundall, the director of scouting for the Red Sox. "I saw RHP Travis Lakins last week in Pawtucket. Stuff was better than when I saw him in Spring Training, but still down a little from last year. FB sat at 90-93 and he mixed a cutter at 88-90 and a CB at 79. His stuff got better as the inning went along on a cold day."
Lakins played for the Chillicothe Paints in 2014 and tossed a perfect game, just almost a year to the day before being drafted by the Red Sox in the sixth round, (171st overall), 2015 MLB First-Year-Player draft. He would finish his season with the Paints posting a 4-0 record in four starts, striking out 26 batters in 27 innings pitched.
According to one Prospect League insider in February, "Lakins has been converted from being a starter to a reliever and has a good chance to make his Major League debut at some point this season. Lakins has registered a 2.32 ERA and 57/18 K/BB ratio in 54.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A last season. The scuttlebutt has been among some industry insiders is that Lakins is a candidate to fill an important role in the Red Sox bullpen as a multi-inning reliever."
