Date:  Source: New Tecumseth Civics

After a successful fundraising campaign throughout late September leading up to the CIBC Run for the Cure that saw the Civics raise over $500 towards breast cancer research, the team has now focused its attention towards its next fundraising initiative, the month long Movember initiative.

Movember is a movement based around the Moustache, participants grow out their Moustaches (MOs) and raise funds in order to raise awareness and fund projects that are directed towards three main causes, Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, and Men’s Mental Health and Suicide prevention.

Civics captain and participant of last year’s team that raised over $1000 had this to say about the team participating in Movember once again, “ November is a great time of the year, not only are we in the middle of the season but it’s also a time that we use to focus on health issues. Movember helps us keep in mind the challenge many men across the world face, whether it’s cancer or depression. I am proud to be a part of the fight to help prevent prostate cancer and men’s suicide alongside my teammates. ”

Some important stats about Movember to share,

  • Movember has funded more than 1200 Men’s health projects in Canada and around the World
  • In Canada Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in Men, It kills Hundreds of Thousands of Men each year and those who survive face serious side effects.
  • By 2030 The Movember Foundation plans to halve the number of men dying from Prostate cancer as well as halve the number of men living with serious side effects
  • By 2030 The Movember Foundation plans on reducing the rate of Male Suicides by 25% with a 6 step program that includes raising awareness, having conversations about men’s mental health, and advocating to the government on behalf of all men that they take action to understand the issues men are Facing

Civics assistant GM who is the captain of the Civics Movember Team was very excited about the opportunity to once again help support the Movember Foundation with the Civics, “I am very proud that I have the opportunity to work with these young men not only in helping to develop them into better hockey players, but into top notch people as well and a big part of that is being involved in the community and with charities. Movember is very important to me especially the initiative that they have towards Men’s mental health and suicide prevention as it is so important to generate a conversation and have those talks with men of all ages particularly the age range that myself and our players fall in (15 to 24) seeing an increase in suicides every year since 2007. It is up to all of us to make sure all men and boys look after their mental health and are comfortable to reach out to others for support when they’re struggling. That is why we will and will continue to participate in the Movember initiative with such passion”.
