The Y Caps Bantam “A” Boys played four games this weekend at Leo Hayes High School as part of the Y’s annual Holiday Hoops Classic and came away with a 5th place finish.
ROUND ROBIN ACTION
Game 1: Y Caps 61 vs. Sussex Classics 38
The opening game of the YMCA Holiday Hoops Classic Bantam A Boys division saw the Y Caps and Sussex Classics battled it out. The game was close at half with the Caps taking a slight 3 point lead with a 26-23 score. The second half was a different story as a determined Caps team pulled away to take the game by a 61 – 39 score. Leading the Caps in scoring were Ewan Robertson with 20 points, Zack Lockhart with 15 and Aiden Garnett with 9 (going 3 for 3 from the three point arch). Robertson also led the team in rebounds with 15 and steals with 11. Lockhart and Eric Park were stingy on defence with 6 and 4 steals apiece. Lockhart and Caleb Scholten led the team in assists with 3 each.
Leading the Classics team in scoring was Matthias Muscroft with 9 points and Lukas McFarlane with 7.
Game 2: Riverview Royals 50 vs. Y Caps 43
In their second game of the tournament, the Y Caps took on a Riverview team determined to take it to their tournament hosts. The Caps started the game fast and opened a 20 – 14 lead in the first quarter before the Royals stormed back to take a 3 point half time lead. The second half was much the same as the two teams were closely matched. In the end, the Royals were able to take the game with a 50 – 43 win. Leading the Caps in scoring in this game were Zack Lockhart with 10 points, Lance Mombourquette with 9, Ewan Robertson with 8 and Luke Simmons with 6. Ewan Robertson led the team in rebounding with 18 boards while Aiden Garnett showed some strong defence with 3 steals.
Leading the Royals in scoring was Mulu Morrisson with 12 points and Tyler Stoyles with 10.
Game 3:
Amherst A's 70 vs. Y Caps 61
In their third game of the day, the Caps were well matched against a strong Amherst side and took a 32-30 lead into the half. Amherst notched up their defensive efforts in the 3rd quarter with a 23-9 run taking a 12 point lead into the 4th. The Caps tried to fight back but ended on the short side with a 70-61 loss. Leading the Caps in scoring in this game were Ewan Robertson with 17 points, Zack Lockhart with 16, Aiden Garnett with 11 and Lance Mombourquette with 10. Leading rebounders for the Caps were Robertson and Garnett with 4 each and Gavin Calder with 3. Lockhart led the team in assists with 3.
Leading the Amherst team in scoring were Brennan VanVulpen with 15 points and Luke Legere with 14.

CONSOLATION GAME:
Y Caps 65 vs. East Saint John Thunder 49
By virtue of their 1-2 record in the preliminary round, the Caps found themselves in the consolation game vs. East Saint John. Based upon past experience, the Caps knew this would be a tough match versus a skilled and physical Saint John team. The Caps displayed some strong defence and moved the ball around well on the offensive end taking a 29-23 point edge into the locker room at half. The second half was much the same with Ewan Robertson and Zack Lockhart leading the Caps to a strong 65-49 win. Player of the game Robertson ended with an impressive 25 points and 15 rebounds while Lockhart contributed 18 points and 11 boards. Ethan VanderToorn had a great defensive game and added 4 rebounds for the winning Caps. This was a strong win for the Caps and one we will build off of.
Leading the East Saint John team in scoring was Cole Defazio with 15 points and Kaden Fudge with 9.
BRONZE MEDAL GAME:
The Bronze Medal game saw a rematch between two closely matched teams Amherst A’s and Riverview Royals.
Amherst A's 53 – Riverview Royals 45
Amherst came out in this game the more determined team. The A’s were able to take a 24-18 lead into the half. The second half was a closer story but the A’s extended their 6 point half time lead to an 8 point win with a final score of 53-45. With the win, Amherst took home tournament bronze.
Leading the A’s in scoring in this game were Declan Leblanc with 15 points and Brody MacDonald with 10. For the Royals, Tyler Stoyles had 16 while Johann Reyes chipped in 10.
GOLD MEDAL GAME:
Moncton Hawks 90 – KV Slammers 50
A very skilled and determined Moncton Hawks team were ready to roll in the final against the KV Slammers and the effort showed with a 48-24 lead at the half. KV had difficulty dealing with the unrelenting pressure Moncton displayed with their full court press throughout the entire game and as a result, Moncton was able to finish with a definitive 90-50 score.
Leading the Hawks in scoring were Mathieu Dube and Caleb Velarde with 21 points each.
Leading the Slammers in scoring was Liam McKee with 16 points.
