Marlborough, MA- The Little Bruins and Cape Cod Whalers won their semifinal contests to advance to the 2017 18U Tier I Massachusetts State Championship Game.
The Little Bruins jumped out in front when Gunnar Fontaine scored from Sam Colangelo and Liam Devlin with 10:17 remaining in the first period.
The score held until the Militia tied it up with 10:50 remaining in regulation.
The Bruins, however, responded just eight seconds later when Devin Tongue scored from Andrew Moynihan to regain the lead.
Twenty-nine seconds later, Fontaine bagged his second of the game with an assist from Cade Webber.
Colangelo netted an unassisted goal with 5:25 on the clock, and Fontaine completed the hat trick with 2:23 to play when he scored from Christian Powers.
Fontaine rounded out the scoring with a tally, his fourth of the game, from Blake Coleman in the closing seconds.
The Whalers punched their tickets to the final with a thrilling 5-3 win over the Eastern Mass Senators. Aidan McDonough put the Whalers on the board first with help from Jack Rathbone and John Murphy.
James O’Brien made it 2-0 early in the second when he scored from Ian Murphy and Trevor Spence. Murphy then made it 3-0 with 10:45 on the clock.
Michael Outzen put the Senators on the board with 8:04 remaining in the frame with help from Matt McGrath.
Cameron Berube scored early in the third with assists from Nolan McElhaney and Matt Guerra to close the gap to 3-2.
A power play goal by Spence from Rathbone made it 4-2 with 10:36 to play in regulation.
Evan Googins opened the Whalers’ lead to 5-2 with 3:56 remaining when he scored from Murphy.
McElhaney bagged a power play goal in the closing minute with an assist from Berube to pull the Senators within two, but that was as close as the Senators would come to tying the game.
The Little Bruins and Cape Cod Whalers will play at 6:30 PM for the State Title and a trip to the 2018 USA Hockey National Tournament.
