Date: Jun 18, 2018

Foxboro, MA- Matt Toporowski scored with 2:29 remaining to force a 3-3 tie between the Boston Jr. Bruins and the Cape Cod Whalers in Massachusetts Select League 18U action. The Bruins opened the scoring eight minutes into the game when Johnny McElaney sent Christian Hayes skating down the left wing. Hayes fired the puck just inside the right post to give the Bruins the early lead. With 4:31 on the clock, John Luca wrapped around the net and hit William Zink in the slot, and Zink fired it past Bruins goalie Jack Eselius to tie the game. The Whalers took the lead with three and a half minutes into the second frame when James O’Brien scored from the left circle with an assist from Evan Googins. Twenty seconds later, O’Brien knocked in a pass from Peter Garrett, Jr., to put the Whalers up by two. The Bruins cut the lead in half when Christian Felton set up McElaney in front of the net and McElaney knocked the puck home. Toporowski tied the game with 2:29 to play when he and Matt Egan went into the zone on a two-on-one. Egan drew the Whalers defenseman over and then dished the puck to Toporowski, who converted on the play. Neither team was able to break the deadlock and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The Cape Cod Whalers and Boston Jr. Bruins await their placements in the Massachusetts 18U State Tournament next weekend.
