CATCHING UP WITH BRIAN GIBBONS
Date: Jun 18, 2018

Boston, MA- The Cape Cod Whalers and Massachusetts Select Hockey League are proud to announce the commitment of 16-and-under goaltender Drew Commesso to Boston University. He is slated to arrive on Agganis Way in the fall of 2020.
“There were many reasons I wanted to play [at Boston University,]” he stated. “The team has an amazing tradition, it’s a great school academically, it’s close to my home, and they have a history of winning national championships. That’s my goal: to win a national championship with the Terriers.”
The Boston native will enter his sophomore season at the storied St. Sebastian’s School in Needham, but after aging out of bantam hockey, needed a new fall-season team. As with his college decision, plenty of factors pointed him in the direction of the Cape Cod Whalers, not the least of which was his bantam coach, Peter Russo.
“Coach Russo coming over to the Whalers was big,” he noted, “he’s a great guy and a great coach, so I wanted to play for him again. I also knew that the Whalers are a great program. A lot of the older guys [at St. Sebastian’s] recommended them. They’ve always been at the top of the league. They made it to Nationals last year and hopefully we’ll do it again.
“So far the season has been great,” he continued. “There are a lot of great teams in the [Mass Select] League and the competition is very high-level. Also, there’s not a lot of travel, so it allows me to get a lot of rest and be ready for school during the week.
“It’s a great honor to make my commitment to BU,” he said. “I’m very thankful for my family, my teammates, my coaches Peter Russo, Scott Shaughnessy, and my goalie coach Brian Eklund. They’ve all been very supportive of me.”
Congratulations to Drew, his family, and the Cape Cod Whalers on this tremendous accomplishment
