Odessa, TX (August 3, 2016) – The Odessa Jackalopes, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), are pleased to announce that former Jack’ Nate Werhane has committed to play NCAA DIII hockey at Buffalo State University. The Bengals compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
In 2015-16, Werhane provided veteran depth on the backend for the Jacks in his final season of junior hockey. The Arvado, CO resident and New Mexico native appeared in 46 games for Odessa last year, totaling 3 goals, 4 assists, a minus-5 rating and 70 penalty minutes (PIM). Werhane was a welcomed addition for Odessa in 2014 from the NA3HL Breezy Point North Stars where he appeared in four games after an 8 game stint with the Bismarck Bobcats (NAHL). Werhane (5-11, 200) played in all three of the Jacks playoff games against Wichita Falls, recording zero points, a plus-1 rating and four PIM.
“I’m really excited to continue my playing career at Buffalo State,” said Werhane. “They have a great program that will allow me to excel both on and off the Ice… I’ve got to thank coach Gatto for giving me an opportunity. The Jacks were a perfect fit and I wouldn’t be here without their support.”
The 21-year-old Werhane will join a Bengals squad that went 15-7-4 in 2015-16 before losing in the SUNYAC semi-finals to SUNY Geneseo.
“Nate was the ultimate team player for us and really added some consistency to our d-core. Never once did he complain about his role and he always gave 100%,” said Jacks head coach Greg Gatto. “I couldn’t be happier for Nate. BSU is getting a great player and an even better person.”
The Odessa Jackalopes will drop the puck on their 20th season at Amarillo on September 10 and play their home opener against Lone Star at Ector County Coliseum on October 27. The home opener will include ½ price beer, $1 hot dogs and a Pikachu appearance. Single game tickets start at just $9 and season ticket plans begin at $179.
