Get to Know Your Dashers: It's a Canadian Thing with Mo

Date:  Source: FHL Danville

Nickname:  Mo

Age:  26

Hobbies:  Anything outdoors, like hiking, and also cooking.  Living on my own the last five years, I get tired of eating the same things, so I like to experiment.  My favorite dish that I make is steak, eggs and avocado.

Favorite sport besides hockey:  Basketball – I played a lot as a kid.

Favorite team:  Montreal Canadiens

Favorite athlete:  Saku Koivu, the former captain of the Montreal Canadiens.  I grew up watching him play.  One year he was battling cancer, missed half the season but came back and finished it.  That’s one of the reasons I admire him.

Favorite type of music:  Alternative rock, easy listening

Favorite singer:  Eddie Vedder

Favorite book:  The Night They Stole the Stanley Cup – I read it when I was 12 and did a book report on it in school three years in a row.

Favorite movie:  Into the Wild

Favorite TV show:  The Price is Right – I don’t get to watch it much, because I’m usually at practice when it’s on, but when I do, it’s a treat.

Favorite animal:   Wolves – They are awesome.

Favorite restaurant:  The Keg – it’s a chain steakhouse in Canada that’s very good.

Favorite meal:  Oatmeal, blueberries and Canadian maple syrup – real syrup, not the fake stuff

Favorite junk food:  Ketchup chips – it’s a Canadian thing

Favorite beverage:  Almond milk – I don’t really drink anything besides that and water.

Favorite color:  Blue

Favorite car/truck:  Just the standard Ford F150 2 door – that’s all I want.

Favorite video game:  NHL ’16 – but I don’t play video games too much any more

Favorite superhero:  Justice Beaver – it’s a Canadian thing again

Favorite holiday:  Christmas – for sure

Favorite cause or charity:  Down syndrome – my cousin Tiffany has Down syndrome, and I’ve grown up with her.  It’s easy to be around her; it’s natural for me.  I love when people with Down syndrome come to the games and talk to us.  It makes me happy.

Favorite vacation destination:  Anywhere at a cottage that’s secluded and away from the city

Favorite place to go to relax:  Anywhere in the wilderness, a nature walk or anywhere close to the water

Favorite saying or quote:  “Eh” – it’s a stereotypical Canadian thing.  I didn’t realize how much I say it until people in the U.S. brought it to my attention.

Pet peeve:  Rookies who talk too much

One thing on your bucket list:  To go on a long hike when the season is over with [teammate Grant] Holliday for at least a week with nothing but a backpack.  It would be a test for myself.

One thing you can’t live without:  Hockey

Person you would most like to meet and why:  Justin Bieber – I want to ask him why he is disgracing Canada.

Best advice you ever received:  “Figure it out” by Stan Butler, my coach at Brampton – there was much more to it than that, but that’s what I got out of it.

Proudest moment:  Winning the championship for the Kingston Voyageurs

Most embarrassing moment:  My first training camp when I was 16 – I was the slowest runner, the weakest (I couldn’t even do one bench press), and I failed every test we had, and everyone watched me the whole time.  It made me very determined, though, not to have that experience again, and the next summer, I was near the top in every category.

Best childhood memory:  My best friend Joe lived across the street from me, and every Christmas at 6 am, I’d run over to his house and we’d open gifts together.  Then we’d run over to my house and open gifts together.  Then we would spend the rest of the day playing the games we got.  The games usually coincided, so it worked out great.  He would get a game system, and I would get the game we both wanted, for example.

One simple pleasure:  Rainy days

One guilty pleasure:  The occasional beer and junk food
