Cornwall wins tough contest against Kanata, 5-3

The Cornwall Colts and the Kanata Stallions were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Cornwall made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Joey Derochie secured the win for the Colts with a goal in the third period.

Norman Grant was all over the ice for Cornwall, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Grant scored the first of his two goals at 17:27 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Ryan Shamshoum provided the assist. Grant's next tally made the score 3-3 with 19:33 left in the third period. Eric Lemire assisted on the tally.

The Colts pulled out the victory even though they were hit with 51 penalty minutes.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 7:50 into the third period. Nine fighting penalties were dished out along with six game misconducts.

Cornwall excelled on the penalty kill, only allowing Kanata to get one power play goal on 17 chances. The Colts' goal total was higher than their season average. This season, Cornwall averages 2.8 goals per contest.

Cornwall also got a goal from Ian Boots as well. Other players who recorded assists for Cornwall were Mark Williams, who had one and Brad Bussey, who had three.

The Stallions racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with 15 minors and three majors for 45 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 29.0 minutes per game Kanata had been spending in the box. The Stallions managed to hold the Colts' power play largely in check, allowing only one goal while on the disadvantage.

Kanata was led by Kyle Watson, who tallied one goal and one assist. Watson scored 16:49 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kanata. Kyle Fletcher also scored for Kanata. More assists for Kanata came via Zachary Hervato, Gene Falsetto, and Maxime Pilon, who each chipped in one.

Jordan Bent made 25 saves for Cornwall on 28 shots. For the Colts, Anthony Ventura, Chris Ayotte, and Dan Frawley were ejected from the contest. Doug Jewer rejected 24 shots on goal for the Stallions. Team's Fletcher, AJ Dopud, and Luke McBride were slapped with misconducts and ejected from the game.
