Chatham sunk by penalties, falls to Leamington 6-3

A rash of penalties cost the Chatham Maroons the game, as the Leamington Flyers netted five goals with a man advantage in a 6-3 win.

With the win, Leamington evened the series at 1-1 in the best of seven showdown.

The Flyers were paced by Colin Moore, who finished with one goal. Moore scored on the power play 4:27 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Leamington. Leamington had gained a power play chance when Mark Fratarcangelli was whistled for high sticking. J.P. Grineau picked up the assist.

In a losing effort, Chatham was led by Ryan Fraser, who racked up two goals. Fraser scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 3:27 into the second period to make the score 1-1. The Maroons had gotten the advantage when the Flyers' Matthew Opblinger was sent off for tripping. Gus Ford assisted on the tally. Fraser's next tally on the power play made the score 5-4 Leamington with 6:37 left in the third period. Connor Koviak picked up the assist.

Leamington forced Maroons' netminders to work without much rest, finishing with 39 shots and forcing 33 saves. Brendan Johnston made 25 stops and Parker Butler made eight.

Leamington also got points from Scott Emerson, who also had one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Leamington included Jacob McGhee, Cale Phibbs, and Luke Sanko, who each put in one. In addition, Leamington received assists from Mark Gangnon, Derek Elliott, and Liam Hogan, who contributed one each and Mitchell Amante and Scott Florence, who each chipped in three.

The defensemen of Chatham were also effective in the Flyers' zone, and came away with two goals.

Chatham additionally got points from Ford, who also registered one goal and one assist. Ross Krieger also scored for Chatham. Other players who recorded assists for Chatham were Connor McKinnon, who had one and Ian Faubert, who had two.

Leamington's Tyler Wall stopped 27 shots out of the 30 that he faced. The Flyers incurred 64 minutes in penalty time with 12 minors. The Maroons totaled 31 minutes in penalty time with eight minors and one major and went 2-for-9 on the power play. For Chatham, McKinnon and Cory Bussing were ejected from the contest.
