Port Hope squeaks by Napanee, 3-2Strathcona Paper Sun, Mar 06, 2016 Story by Narrative Science.
In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Port Hope Panthers escaped with a 3-2 victory over the Napanee Raiders. Port Hope gained the winning advantage on a goal by Jonah Goodman 11:09 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer. The win gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. Shawn Mackie had two goals to lead Port Hope to victory. Mackie found the back of the net 13:45 into the first period to make the score 1-1 and again while 11:55 into the second to make the score 3-1 Port Hope. The Panthers put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Napanee to score on any of its four power plays. Port Hope's offense rang up 45 shots on the Raiders' net. More assists for Port Hope came via Matthew Cavanaugh, who had one and Andrew Gurr, who had two. Napanee's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Port Hope power plays. The Raiders were helped by Riley Steeves, who racked up one goal. Steeves scored 13:15 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Port Hope. Zach Knapp-Hermer assisted on the tally. Tyler Romain also scored for Napanee. In addition, Napanee received assists from Brandon Major, Cullen Hinds, and Austin Boulard, who contributed one each. The Panthers' Aaron Young stopped 21 shots out of the 23 that he faced. Port Hope incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors. Paul Giusti recorded 42 saves for Napanee. The Raiders ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Napanee ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Knapp-Hermer was ejected from the game.
