Kitchener wins tough contest against Brantford, 6-4

The game between the Kitchener Dutchmen and the Brantford 99ers was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Kitchener emerged with a 6-4 win.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Connor Cole secured the win for the Dutchmen with a goal in the second period.

The win gave Kitchener a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series.

The Dutchmen got the win on the strength of a great game by Jason Willms, who had one goal and two assists. Willms scored 5:41 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Kitchener. Michael Alberga provided the assist.

Brantford's power play was ineffective against Kitchener's penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.

The Dutchmen's offense rang up 43 shots on the 99ers' net.

Kitchener also got points from Owen Lane, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Nathan Grossi, who also had one goal and two assists, and Cole, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Kitchener included Marselis Subban and Zack Hedley, who scored one goal each. More assists for Kitchener came via Alex Demrovsky and Adam Kawalec, who each chipped in one.

The defensemen of Brantford were also effective in Kitchener's zone, and came away with two goals.

The 99ers were led by Brandon Scanlin, who registered two goals. Scanlin scored the first of his two goals at 8:51 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matt Scanlin picked up the assist. Scanlin's next tally made the score 5-4 Kitchener with 12:33 left in the third period. Brantford had taken the advantage when the Dutchmen's Willms got sent off for cross checking. Kyle Walker provided the assist. Brantford additionally got points from Jack Phibbs, who also racked up one goal and one assist. Isaac Nurse also scored for Brantford. In addition, Brantford received assists from Guy Polillo, who had two and Christian Polillo and Macklin McPhee, who contributed one each.

Kitchener's starting goalie, Cossimo Lazzarino, made 15 saves and finished with the win before he was taken out in favor of Luke Richardson, who stopped zero shots. The Dutchmen totaled 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. For Kitchener, JD Sterne was ejected from the game. Will Rawski recorded 37 saves for the 99ers. Brantford ended with seven minutes in penalty time with one minor and one major. The 99ers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jay Dekker was ejected from the game.
