Brantford outlasts Whitby, 6-4

The game between the Brantford Blast and the Whitby Dunlops was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Brantford emerged with a 6-4 win.

The Blast gained the winning advantage on a goal by Ryan McCarthy 15:12 into the second period and hung on until final buzzer.

The win by Brantford clinched the best of seven series at 4-2.

The Blast got the win with help from a great game by Derek Medeiros, who had two goals and one assist. Medeiros scored the first of his two goals at 3:32 into the second period to make the score 3-2 Brantford. Brandon Dietrich picked up the assist. Medeiros' next tally made the score 5-3 Brantford with 2:48 left in the second period.

Brantford additionally got points from Dietrich, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Joel Prpic, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points, and McCarthy, who also had one goal and one assist. Mark Taylor also scored for Brantford. In addition, Brantford received assists from Mike Burgoyne, Jacob Ledyard, and Jamie Williams, who contributed one each.

Whitby stifled Brantford's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Dunlops kept the Blast's goalie busy throughout the game, and Anthony Marshall made 37 saves on 41 shots.

Whitby was led by Peter MacKellar, who grabbed two goals and one assist. MacKellar scored the first of his two goals at 13:06 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matthew Baxter assisted on the tally. MacKellar's next tally made the score 5-4 Brantford with 9:32 left in the third period. The Dunlops had gotten the advantage when Brantford's Williams was sent off for slashing. Scott Freeman picked up the assist. Whitby also had goals scored by Corey Tamblyn and John Scrymgeour, who scored one goal each.

The Blast incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. Whitby's starting goalie, Jason Guy, made 16 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Anthony Kimlin, who stopped eight shots. The Dunlops incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors.
