New Hamburg rolls over Norwich, 8-3

The Norwich Merchants had trouble finding ways to stop the New Hamburg Firebirds, which beat Merchants, 8-3.

The win by New Hamburg clinched the best of seven series at 4-0.

Norwich's 14 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Merchants let up four goals while on the penalty kill.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 2:55 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with three game misconducts.

The Firebirds' offense rang up 47 shots on Norwich's net.

New Hamburg was led by Walker Davison, who racked up two goals and one assist. Davison scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 2:54 into the first period to make the score 2-0 New Hamburg. An interference penalty on Dalton Alford had put the Firebirds on the power play. Carter Tracey assisted on the tally. Davison's next tally on the power play made the score 8-3 New Hamburg with 3:08 left in the third period. New Hamburg had taken the advantage when the Merchants' Alford got sent off for abuse of officials. Colin Martin picked up the assist. New Hamburg additionally got points from Brodie Muckler, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for New Hamburg included Ethan Adair, Tyler Randerson, Mario Alyas, Curtis Smith, and Tyler Hoffman, who scored one goal each. Other players who recorded assists for New Hamburg were Andrew Boer, who had three, Brandon Quan, Jerry Ennett, and Chris Eckert, who contributed one each, and Peter Brindley and Quinten Haddock, who each chipped in two.

Norwich was led by Jordan Gillis, who had two goals and one assist. Gillis scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 17:01 into the first period to make the score 3-1 New Hamburg. The Merchants had gained a power play chance when Randerson was whistled for roughing after whistle. Riley Monture assisted on the tally. Gillis' next tally on the power play made the score 6-2 New Hamburg with 46 seconds left in the second period. Jordan Everets picked up the assist. Norwich also got a goal from Matt Dipaolo as well. More assists for Norwich came via Zack Morrison, who had two.

Ryan Purcell recorded 21 saves for the Firebirds. New Hamburg ended with 17 minutes in penalty time with six minors and one major. For the Firebirds, Boer was ejected from the game. Andrew Lefebvre rejected 39 shots on goal for Norwich. The Merchants totaled 51 minutes in penalty time with 13 minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play. For Norwich, Jesse Dunn and Nathan Innes were ejected from the contest.
