Wheatley rides Morneau to victory over Blenheim, 4-1

A stellar performance between the pipes by Eric Morneau helped the Wheatley Omstead Sharks defeat the Blenheim Blades, 4-1.

Wheatley was led by Brian Johnson, who racked up one goal and one assist. Johnson scored 17:50 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Wheatley. Mitchell Prudence picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 19:36 into the third period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

The Omstead Sharks excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances.

Wheatley additionally got points from Brett Bowman, who also registered one goal and two assists to lead the team in points and Prudence, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Nick Tavolieri-Essex also scored for Wheatley. More assists for Wheatley came via Justin Pinsonneault and Mitch Lantin, who contributed one each.

Blenheim put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Wheatley to score on any of its three power plays. The Blades' offense operated below their season average. Blenheim averages 4.0 goals per game.

The Blades were led by Corbin Hagerman, who scored the team's only goal. Hagerman scored 17:22 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Matt Clark provided the assist.

The Omstead Sharks' Morneau stopped 27 shots out of the 28 that he faced. Wheatley ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. The Omstead Sharks ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Prudence was ejected from the game. Eric Stewardson recorded 23 saves for Blenheim. The Blades ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major. For Blenheim, Clark was ejected from the game.
