Norwich hangs on, beats Woodstock 2-1

The Norwich Merchants took the lead against the Woodstock Navy Vets in the first period and maintained it until the end of the game to secure a tight 2-1 victory.

Norwich took over the lead for good with a goal by Jesse Dunn at 13:31 in the first period. Brandon Velda assisted on the tally.

The Merchants were led by goalie Andrew Hawkins, who finished with 31 saves while allowing one goal. Hawkins certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 3.91 entering the contest.

Norwich was sparked by Jamie Kelly, who grabbed one goal. Kelly scored short handed 13:10 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Norwich. The Merchants were on a disadvantage when Adam Harris went off the ice for fighting. Zack Morrison picked up the assist.

Referees had their hands full with a major incident at 11:50 into the second period. Four fighting penalties were dished out along with two game misconducts.

Norwich was unable to stop Woodstock from sending pucks towards the net, and the Navy Vets eventually piled up 32 shots on goal.

Woodstock was led by Dan Haig, who scored the team's only goal. Haig scored on the power play 13:22 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Norwich. Jacob Brown assisted on the tally.

The Merchants totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Norwich ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Harris was ejected from the game. Jackson Swindells rejected 24 shots on goal for the Navy Vets. Woodstock totaled nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. For the Navy Vets, Chris Nauts was ejected from the game.
