Nichols School squeaks by Appleby College, 5-4J.S. Gairdner Arena Wed, Jan 06, 2016 The Nichols School Vikings and the Appleby College Blue Dogs were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Nichols School made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-4. Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Lucas Herrmann secured the win for the Vikings with a goal in the third period. Nichols School was paced on offense by Steve Senese and Jack Millar, who combined for seven points. Senese tallied one goal and three assists and Millar also notched one goal and two assists. The Vikings kept Appleby College's goalie busy throughout the game, and Nicolas Solari made 36 saves on 41 shots. Nichols School's defensemen played an important role in the offense, chipping in two goals. The Vikings could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 20 minutes in penalties during the game. Nichols School also got points from Matt Gasuik, who also grabbed one goal and one assist and Millar, who also had one goal and two assists. Anthony Scanzuso also scored for Nichols School. In addition, Nichols School received assists from Cole Donhauser, who had one and Alec Yerkovich, who had two. Nichols School was unable to stop the Blue Dogs from sending pucks towards the net, and Appleby College eventually piled up 34 shots on goal. The Blue Dogs found themselves short handed often, totaling 18 penalty minutes and allowing five power plays. Appleby College was led by Tommy Hoogaars, who registered two goals and one assist. Hoogaars scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 19:08 into the first period to make the score 2-2. The Blue Dogs had gotten the advantage when the Vikings' Senese was sent off for hooking. Phil Mazzuca assisted on the tally. Hoogaars' next tally on the power play made the score 3-2 Appleby College with 7:19 left in the second period. Dayton Saunders provided the assist. Others who scored for Appleby College included Callum Jones and Patrick Vulgan, who each put in one. More assists for Appleby College came via Blake Mueller, Jacob Gower, Steve Jang, and Will Graham, who each chipped in one. Jerry Baerwitz made 30 saves for Nichols School on 34 shots. Appleby College registered two goals on six power play opportunities.
