Michigan State University hangs on, beats Rhode Island University of 3-2

The Michigan State University Spartans beat the Rhode Island University of Rams, 3-2, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Michigan State University took over the lead for good with a goal by Kara Scaturro at 3:57 in the first period. Elise Plancon assisted on the tally.

The Spartans were sparked by Sydney Glanz, who registered one goal. Glanz scored on the power play 13:28 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Michigan State University. Michigan State University had taken the advantage when Rhode Island University of's Jacquelyn Keable got sent off for hooking. Ashley Astor picked up the assist.

In the losing effort, the Rams were led by Brenna Callahan, who racked up two goals. Callahan scored the first of his two goals at 15:22 into the first period to make the score 2-1 Michigan State University. Casey Mccormick assisted on the tally. Callahan's next tally made the score 3-2 Michigan State University with 5:54 left in the second period. Janessa Courtney picked up the assist.

The Spartans put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Rhode Island University of to score on any of its three power plays. Michigan State University kept the Rams' goalie busy throughout the game, and Abigail Torres made 38 saves on 41 shots.

Michigan State University additionally got points from Scaturro, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Jenay DeCaussin also scored for Michigan State University. In addition, Michigan State University received assists from Andrea Uglietta and Natalie Prisciandaro, who each chipped in one.

Rhode Island University of forced the Spartans' goalies to work hard to keep the puck out of the net, taking 37 shots and forcing 35 saves. Kathryn Hamer made 16 stops and Hannah Johnson made 19. The Rams got an offensive boost from their blueliners, who contributed two goals during the game.

More assists for Rhode Island University of came via Alisha Difilippo and Sydney Collins, who contributed one each.

Michigan State University incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors. Rhode Island University of incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
